OBD-II (On-Board Diagnostics) sistemi, 1996 yılından sonra üretilen araçlarda standart hale getirilmiş bir elektronik denetleme sistemidir. Aracın motor, şanzıman ve diğer alt sistemlerini sürekli izleyerek bir sorun tespit ettiğinde bunu 5 karakterli DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) adı verilen kodlarla kaydeder.

İkinci karakter, kodun genel mi yoksa üreticiye özel mi olduğunu belirtir:
Sadece P kodlarında 3. karakter; yakıt/hava, ateşleme, emisyon, rölanti, ECU, şanzıman ve hibrit alt sistemlerini belirtir.
Son iki karakter, hatanın spesifik numarasını verir. Hangi sensör/devre/sinyalde problem olduğunu tanımlar.
