Did you top up the engine oil recently? Are you sure there is diesel in the fuel? There is quite a bit of smell cross over in these engines because of the sensitive nature of the piston rings.Something really annoying about that is that there is quite a bit of oil burnt out the ring for this same reason so most rangers will require a 1-2L top up every 5000km. The problem that then comes from this is that it is a variable flow system and can take anywhere between 10 mins and 2 hours to actually drain back into the sump and get an accurate range. If your on a slight incline this can also dramatically affect the reading on your dipstick.I myself wound up over filling by 200ml thinking that she was running low and the gauge still read at 1/8th under. This caused a heavier smell than usual, so noticeable it was clear from just the small amount on the dipstick.
